Lösemittel im Asphaltlabor – Aktueller Stand

Using solvents in asphalt laboratories – the status quo

Dipl.-Ing. M. Schellenberger;
Dr.-Ing. A. Alisov, Hofolding

For many years, quality assurance in asphalt laboratories and the testing of asphalt mixtures have taken the form of the analysis and breaking down of the material into its constituent parts and the subsequent determination of its composition and, if necessary, any other physical properties. Solvents — predominantly trichloroethylene (TRI) — are used for such tasks. In the past, the health hazard posed by TRI was addressed by either not using TRI or replacing it with a safe substitute (e. g. with water when
determining maximum density) in those cases where it was possible. However, it is still necessary to use TRI for some processes. The inclusion of TRI on the candidate list of substances of very high concern of the EU's REACH regulation in 2010 triggered a process that culminated in the authorization to use TRI in asphalt laboratories under specific conditions until April 2023. Until then, it is a matter of great urgency to find sustainable alternatives and to underpin these alternatives with technical standards
and specifications.

Nähte und Anschlüsse in Asphaltflächen – Bedeutung, Ausführung, Instandsetzung und prüftechnische Ansprache im Labor

Seams and connections in asphalt surfaces – Denotation, construction, maintenance and test methodology

Local conditions or building process-related boundary conditions often require the production of asphalt surfaces by a section or track-wise installation. Renewal and rehabilitation measures "under the wheel" are to be mentioned here in particular. The production of permanent seams and connections between the individual sections as well as the connection to existing surfaces or installations is essential for the durability and service life of the entire surface. A sensitization of all participants as well as a conscientious preparation and a corresponding duty of care in the execution are absolutely necessary in order to ensure a sufficient quality of the road-construction. In addition to the knowledge of necessary construction-technical measures and methods for the formation of seams or joints in the production of surfaces made of asphalt as well as methods for the technical inspection of seams are required. In this context, the present work should provide a comprehensive overview of the importance of seams and joints for the durability of asphalt surfaces. Also, the requirements of the relevant directives and regulations for the implementation of structural measures for the execution of seams and joints in the installation of asphalt as well as possible repair procedures of damaged seams and joints in the operating phase are fully explained. In addition, a method is sketched which provides first approaches, including, among other things, the production of specimens with the roller segment  compactor, the addressing of the low-temperature behaviour with uniaxial tensile and cooling tests and the addressing of the resistance to heat with the wheel tracking test. In particular, it has been shown that the production and preparation of the asphalt flank have an influence on the durability of the seam.

Geotechnical aspects of the construction of the motorway A 44 n on a 190 m deep dump in the Garzweiler opencast mine

Dr. M. Back, Bergheim

Every year, RWE Power produces about 90 million tons of brown coal in the Rhenish lignite mining area, most of which is used to generate electricity. Lignite can only be extracted in open-cast mining in this dimension. The intervention of the mining process in the densely populated cultural landscape is therefore very deep. In the course of the planned progress of the Garzweiler II mine, the former A 44, passing through the mine, was interrupted in 2006. The traffic of the broken connection since then was
redirected on the A 61 running west, which was previously expanded six-lane. In the period up to the currently used A 61 it was necessary to restore the A 44 n as a substitute route. On 29/08/2018, after about 10 years of planning and construction of the road between the interchange Jackerath and Holz, the new six-lane motorway was released on time for traffic. More than seven kilometres of the A 44 n run on the inside dump of the Garzweiler open-pit mine with depths of up to 190 m. The challenges of the unique project were due to the huge thickness of the dump and to the very tight schedule. A specially adapted dumping concept with a stepped material composition was developed to produce a stable ground for motorway construction. This could be successfully implemented in open pit mining operation by using a spreader for backfilling of the overburden. For the determination of measures for individual constructions (e. g. bridges) and track sections, a permanent engineering, scientific and mining support and the control of the measures took place. In the course of the early determined alignment of the A 44 n, it was possible to coordinate mining and engineering measures at an early stage. The application of necessary soil improvement measures could thus be limited to special areas such as the founding of bridges or areas with a short residence time of the dump.

Performanceorientierte Fahrbahnoberflächen „Top-down-Modell mit implementierter KPI – Schnittstellenkommunikation“

Performance-oriented road surfaces „Top-down model with implemented KPI interface communication“

Dr.-Ing. M. Wieland, Barbara Jungen, M. Eng., Bergisch Gladbach

Along with the challenges of digitalisation and the resulting opportunities in the transport sector, the topics of resource scarcity, climate change and climate protection are now coming to the fore. In the area of road construction, the criteria of “Product and Process Quality” in conjunction with the LCP “Planning and Realisation” are particularly worthy of mention because the quality and sustainability of the road superstructure is strongly influenced in these phases. With regard to sustainability, a key role can effectively be assigned to the road surface. To enable the integrated evaluation of quality in conjunction with the sustainability of road surfaces, a plausible evaluation model was developed. The performances of skid-resisting properties, evenness, noise level and rolling resistance were selected in line with the European tyre label and because of their significant effect on the five aspects of sustainability and are therefore virtually identically weighted. In the area of concrete road construction, this model can be used, for example, to perform an integrated evaluation of grinding textures. For instance, a large number of different textures of the “texture grinding” (Type S and Type S+) generation is currently being tested on federal highways. The primary goal in this regard is to introduce these textures promptly as alternative standard textures for concrete road construction. The subsequent generation (Type A and Type A+) is pursuing the selective texturing, among other things, for the creation of performance-oriented surface design. The production of High Performance Road Surfaces (HPRS) in a subsequent texture generation would therefore be possible. The purpose of the label is to provide users contemplating a purchase with sufficient information about the criteria of rolling resistance, wet-road holding and noise emissions in conjunction with greater driving safety, less environment pollution and lower fuel consumption.
